The Initiative
Geographic data, in digital and map form, is vital part of the environmental studies and decision making. Scientists, managers, resource specialists, and others use geographic information for a range of applications, from regional planning to local development.
The Environmental Spatial Metadata Archive of Pakistan (ESMAP) project is a multi-agency effort, lead by the WWF-Pakistan, to make geographic data about the environment available on the Internet. This geographic metadata clearing house service is established to promote the access and usage of spatial datasets available in the public domain in a sustainable way. The objectives of this effort are:
- to pool the information about spatial data available within environmental domain in Pakistan.
- to share information about quality of such data and its other associate technical attributes.
- to facilitate environmental donors/agencies to avoid wasteful duplicate effort and to promote effective economical management of such resources.
